Movement is such a simple concept. Yet, we do not get enough movement to nourish our joints, build stronger bones, and reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease. A lack of movement is especially common for small business owners. Even those who do move on a regular basis may not be moving appropriately. Gym machines confine motion and prevent one from moving according to one’s unique anatomy and development. Also, many who are confined to a chair throughout the day may not choose the appropriate movements to challenge the tissues strained while in the seated position. Although movement is a simple concept, it has the potential to play a significant role in health.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, fewer than 5 percent of the adult population participates in physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes a day. Modern technology, culture, and priorities promote a sedentary lifestyle. Negative consequences associated with a lack of movement within a daily routine continue to reduce the quality of life one experiences. Lifestyle mediated chronic disease continues to rise, stress plagues a majority of the population, and depression rates rise despite modern advancements in medicine. At some point, something must give. Children currently spend approximately seven and a half hours a day glued to a television, computer, or cell phone screen. Adults, children are not the only ones spending their time in front of a digital screen. Yes, entertainment and technological advances provide comfort, but movement mustn’t be forgotten.

So, where to begin? Quite simply, begin with movement. Play outside with the kids, take regular movement breaks at work, and find an enjoyable hobby. If time is a concern, consider a form of movement known as high intensity interval training (HIIT). This form of exercise involves bursts of intense activity followed by periods of recovery. Various studies indicate that one can experience the benefits of an hour workout in just 10 minutes.

Also, be sure to get outside. Northwest Arkansas provides excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation. There is no shortage of trails.
